GAS SAVINGS THROUGH HEAT RECOVERY Kunert Wellpappe uses approximately 15 m of process steam each day This steam is fed into the corrugated cardboard production systems at a pressure of about 13 bar To generate the steam the supply water must be heated from the ambient temperature of about 20 C to over 100 C Using the heat recovered from the air com pressors by their built in heat exchangers allows us to heat the supply water up to about 70 C before it enters the boiler The remaining energy to be added to the water to convert it to its gaseous aggregate state is thus substantially reduced At a rough estimate the savings incurred by the heat recovery system amount to about 850 kWh worth of gas each day or nearly 200 000 kWh annually In other Kunert Group plants as well we are already actively using the principle of heat recovery to save resources for example in the areas of adhesive production or core drying STATE OF THE ART HEAT RECOVERING AIR EXHAUST SYSTEM Corrugated cardboard production is an energy intensive process In consequence the ambient temperature in the vicinity of the production systems rises significantly The edge trimmings and any paper dust are removed by a powerful exhaust system ensuring a clean and safe environment for the production process POTENTIAL SAVINGS IN GAS ENERGY Required heat energy to heat the water from 20 C to 70 C 58 kWh 14 h 812 kWh worth of gas per day 245 production days 198 940 kWh worth per year This is equivalent to 15 Smart regulation technology modulates the engine speed of the compressor in order to adjust the amount of compressed air pro duced to exactly match the current demand of the production systems at a given time The energy loss is significantly reduced Furt hermore the compressors are equipped with an integrated highly efficient heat recovery system that stores the generated heat in a hot water tank The heat thus recovered is used later by the corrugated cardboard production systems as process heat In consequence about 80 of the warmth generated during air compression can be put to use considerably reducing the amount of gas needed by the boilers for steam production SUSTAINABILITY I ENERGY SAVINGS AND HEAT RECOVERY 22
