CLIMATE PROTECTION IN ALL PAPER MILLS The two paper mills of Carl Macher in Brunnenthal and Papeteries du Rhin in Illzach Alsace were modernised with great attention to detail as well as state of the art technology that is efficient in terms of energy and raw materials We attach great importance to achieving the highest quality standards and the maximum possible fibre yield ADDING VALUE ON A SUSTAINABLE BASIS Papeteries du Rhin operates with very low water and primary energy consumption and has advanced to become our French flag ship operation through its incredibly low CO2 emission figures This climate friendly paper mill has already been able to resell a large portion of its CO2 certificates and is thus in contrast to many other European paper mills independent of the purchase of these certificates Environmentally friendly production was made possible by connecting to the steam pipeline network of the local Mulhouse special purpose association Papeteries du Rhin generates around 80 of its steam requirements through the ther mal energy that is produced in the Mulhouse waste incineration plant and transported via the steam pipeline network The paper mill was able to reduce CO2 emissions to 0 050 t through the use of 52 GWh of thermal energy Papeteries du Rhin co financed the 1 2 km steam pipeline that transfers service water from the paper mill to the municipali ty s waste water treatment plant The coop eration with the Mulhouse special purpose association has resulted in an optimum utilisation level for the treatment plant which treats service water according to the latest standards SUSTAINABILITY I PAPER MILLS 12
